Learning from plants – plants are the basis of all life on earth: without plants, humans and animals would not have the oxygen to breathe. However, plants form not only the roots of the world, they are a signpost for the future of humankind and innovative product ideas. In their adaptation to changing environmental conditions and their ability to create robust structures, plants have so far shown themselves to be superior to all technical solutions – and therefore provide researchers with role models and sources of inspiration in the search for concepts for the sustainable development of our planet.
Bamboo is durable, versatile and easy to cut and connect, and yet is a very capable load-bearing construction material. The speed at which it grows and cost of procurement are also important factors in why bamboo is so interesting to the construction industry, where it is used for scaffolding. These scaffolds are transported to site as individual lengths of bamboo and then tied together by rope. When no longer required, they are dismantled into their individual lengths and taken to the next site.
